SPRING GLOSSARY
•Active Coils:

Those coils which are free to deflect under load.

•Body length:
The length of extension springs in the unloaded position fort the coiled part only.
•Buckling:
Bowing or lateral deflection of compression springs under loading.
•Direction of wind:
Important in the use of torsion springs. The load should cause the springs to rotate in the same direction in which it is coiled. This can be either right hand or left hand.
• Free length:
The length of a compression spring in the unloaded position.
•Initial tension:
The force that tends to keep the coils of an extension spring closed and which must be overcome before the coils start to open.
•Pitch:
Distance from center to center of the wire in adjacent active coils.
• Spring index:
Ration of mean coil diameter to wire diameter.
  • Stress relieving
To subject cold formed springs to low temperature heat treatment so as to relieve residual stresses retaining in spring material.
